Who is running the CISMA Scapulothoracic Assessment System (SAS) project?
The project is a collaboration between academic staff in the Department of Physiotherapy at Cardiff University, UK and shoulder clinicians at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the Aneurin Bevan Health Board, both in South Wales. However the successful development of the CISMA SAS is entirely dependent upon the involvement of the wider, shoulder community.
Who else is associated with the project?
Initial funding for the project has been provided by rcbc – the Research Capacity Building Collaboration Wales in association with the Welsh Assembly Government.
Why should I sign up to the CISMA initiative?
The CISMA initiative and specifically the CISMA SAS project, is a unique opportunity for the shoulder community to shape and inform the development of a unified approach to quantifying and recording scapulothoracic position and movement. The participation of the clinical community means that the resulting assessment system should be reflective of and responsive to clinical need. The aim therefore is that by participating in its development, clinicians will be more inclined to use the assessment system.
What will be the benefit of participating in the CISMA initiative and specifically the CISMA Scapulothoracic Assessment System (SAS) project?
Your participation is essential so that the resulting assessment system is truly reflective of clinical practice. This will be a chance for you to inform an assessment system for use by the shoulder clinical community. Participation could also provide a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity to engage in current research.
Are you only interested in Physiotherapist's opinions?
No. Treatment and management of patients with shoulder pain /disability is typically undertaken by a team of clinicians, including Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physiotherapists, General Practitioners and Sports Medicine Practitioners. However each professional group has its own preferred way of describing and recording scapulothoracic position and movement which consequently presents an obstacle to effective communication. CISMA are therefore seeking the input of all clinicians involved in the assessment of patients with shoulder pain / disability.
Who has ethically reviewed the CISMA Scapulothoracic Assessment System (SAS) project?
Ethical approval for the project has been granted by the South East Wales Research Ethics Committee, the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board R&D Committee and the Aneurin Bevan Health Board R&D Committee.
What information will I need to provide about myself?
If you sign up to the CISMA initiative and specifically the CISMA SAS project, then we will ask you to provide details such as your name, profession, grade, level of experience, place of work and professional registration body number.
Why do you need this information?
It is important that the results of the CISMA SAS project and the subsequent assessment system stand up to scientific scrutiny. Therefore to provide evidence that the views expressed are from the clinical community, details such as name, profession and professional registration body number will be checked against the databases such as the Health Professions Council (HPC) and General Medical Council (GMC).
Information such as profession, grade, level of experience and place of work will allow for the opinions provided to be sub-analysed according to the experience of the respondent and their professional background. It will also be used to explore if the scapulothoracic assessment system project findings vary according to the geographical location of the respondent.
Who will have access to my details and will my opinions remain confidential?
All personal details will be securely held at the Department of Physiotherapy, Cardiff University and will not be passed onto any third parties. The data will only be used to analyse the responses according to Professional background, etc. Where this data is presented it will be ensured that no individual will be identifiable from the information provided.
